RADIO CONNECTION GRADS AND
MENTORS
DISCUSS OUR RADIO SCHOOL ALTERNATIVE COURSES
When I first got into this program everybody told me
that I wasn’t getting into radio, radio was an extremely hard business
to get into that none of the interns that they had here before the
internship of a couple of weeks is nothing compared to what you can get
through Jim’s Career Connections which is a hands on day after
day. Al my mentor calling me up and bugging me everyday to come
in and do work. That’s the kind of program that’s needs to be done and
I think that that’s what is going to come out on top. These
communication schools aren’t, they are just not going to work because I
have seen too many people that I know have gone to these schools and
they are working at waiters because they can’t get a job on radio. They
don’t know anybody. I guess the only reason I got this job here
is because I knew the program director, I knew people in the business
and when they were looking for somebody to hire I was right there in
their face. I was already interning at the radio station. I knew the
ins and outs of what was going on here and if it wasn’t for Jim I
wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you today. I wouldn’t have the job
of producing the number one morning show in the market. Its awesome
opportunity and for my first job in radio I am better off than some
people that went to school and they have been doing this for 5 or 10
years.

I
guess I have been doing this for about almost a year now having the
morning show. I am pretty proud of that. I am the number one
show. I am more than happy I dialed that number to Jim. Career
Connection helped me in my career, has given me a career a new career
that I never thought I would ever have and I guess I can thank them
only by setting the standard and giving them the biggest promotion job
I can ever do. My seniors were there, happier students I know about
their most successful, I am sure they have a lot more successful
students because of the internship program that they have.

My name is Lila Walker and I am already a
broadcaster. I
grew up working on dairy farm which I worked on 12 years. I always
dreamed of getting into radio but I never thought that I would have the
opportunity to find the answers and the rise of the cost of college
situation these days. I heard about Career Connection through an ad in
the newspaper. I answered the ad even though I was very skeptical.
Career Connection hooked me up with a radio station of my choice which
was Hot Country 104. I trained there under the direction of the
News Director Jeff Edwards using the curriculum that career connection
sent me for 5 months. At the end of the training I was hired to work
afternoons on 601 AM station while working weekend overnights on the
6000 watt FM station. I worked there for 9 months before I answered an
ad in Radio and Records for a 6000 watt FM station working afternoons
at WUCZ in Carthridge Tennessee. I applied for the position and got
it.
