Myths tell us that a phoenix is a mythical bird with beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life, it builds a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites. Both the nest and bird burn and are reduced to ashes. From the ashes a new, young phoenix arises.
Three major mountains buttress Phoenix, providing tons of views along with outdoor sports activities from hiking, to biking and climbing. The Sonoran Desert is a great place to play, and it is one of the most ecologically diverse deserts in the world. With seven large lakes within an easy drive of the city, there is also plentiful water sports activities, and let’s not forget ballooning.
Famous people from Phoenix include musicians and singers Alice Cooper, Tanya Tucker and Stevie Nicks, among others. Steve Allen spent a year here as a radio disc jockey before his career as a comedian took off, and Linda Carter best known for her TV role as Wonder Woman is from Phoenix as is Dick Van Dyke. Sports wise, Wayne Gretzky, the greatest player that ice hockey has ever known is now the Managing Partner of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey club and Olympic gold medalist Gary Hall, Jr. is from Phoenix.
