HONOLULU is the tourist Mecca for the state of Hawaii, but behind the beautiful beaches and palm trees lies a rather large media communications infrastructure. Though small in market size, currently ranked 64th largest ADI Market, Hawaii is a media Mecca and with more radio stations per person than anywhere else, there are lots of job opportunities. In fact, Hawaii has more radio stations per capita than any place in the US. Hawaii is also the number one consumer of SPAM, on a per capita basis, in the US. Coincidence? Who knows? Dietary considerations aside, this offers MASA radio students in Hawaii a fertile ground to break in as a DJ or audio engineer.
Among Honolulu radio luminaries were the Arthur Godfrey Show, Hawaii Calls with Webley Edwards, J. Akuhead Pupule (the first US DJ to earn over a $1,000,000 per year) and Dave Donnelly. As previously mentioned, there are a lot of radio stations in Hawaii, but when we're in the islands we park our dial on these: KCCN FM100, KDNN FM Island 98.5, Krater 96 FM, KIKI FM 1-94 and KINE RADIO FM 105.
So ask yourself, are you interested in a career in radio as a DJ, Sports Announcer, Talk Show Host or Program Director? If you are, the best way for you to make it happen is to take the next step and apply for the RADIO CONNECTION Mentor/Apprentice Radio School. Start your dreams today.
